Cabo del Sol the magazine
course-raters found Nicklaus' second design in Los Cabos, Cabo del Sol, to
be nothing short of spectacular. Golf ranked it No. 70 in the world last
year. In May, Golf Digest made it one of its 10 five-star public courses
anywhere. It has sea views from almost every hole and three of them are
right on the beach. The rest of the layout wends uphill and down through
ruggedly scenic country, crossing canyons and edged by forget-about-it
desert scrub. Cabo del Sol has five sets of tees, and selecting the right
one is essential. There are several carries over canyons of no return,
doglegs that offer obvious consequences from one angle, mysteries from
another. Cabo del Sol is a sure
winner! |

CABO
REAL Robert Trent Jones, Jr. set
his goal to create a quality course that appears to have been designed by
its setting, where every hole features ocean views." When you see the
impeccably groomed fairways and greens, you will agree that he has not
only achieved this goal, but surpassed it.
CABO
REAL Golf Course are laid out
over more than 7000 yards. With its numerous sand traps and arroyos, the
course provides a real challenge for low handicap golfers but is still
great fun for beginners. For those of you who would like a challenge, from
the back tees, the course offers a rating of 73.8 with the slope at a
stern test of 135. From the first to the sixth holes, you work your way up
into the mountains. As you wind down the mountain, sneak past the lake on
the ninth fairway and stop for a well-deserved snack at the club house,
conveniently located at the junction of the first, ninth, 10th, 18th and
36th holes. Then, head on down to the Sea of Cortez for a more relaxing
back nine. With a variety of hazards and a choice of tees, this course
presents both a challenge to the champion and a delight to amatures and
beginers.

Cabo San Lucas Country Club |
Campo
de Carlos
Holes: 18
Yardage: 7158
Par: 72
Another 18 recently opened and designed by P. Dye
Cabo
San Lucas Country Club Pete Dye was contracted to design Cabo San Lucas
Country Club. The land is essentially flat, the last high spot between a
line of coastal hills and the harbor where the Sea of Cortez meets the
Pacific Ocean. It's an inviting kind of place where you stand on every tee
and think birdie. The fairways are amply wide, and only the wildest shots
can find the adjoining sandy, mesquite and cactus-filled scrubland. The
bunkering is strategic, not penal; you can putt out of a lot of greenside
bunkers. The greens are almost all open in front and all but a couple
slope gently away to chipping areas. There are no forced carries over
canyons, washes or water. As entertaining as
Cabo San Lucas Country Club can be,
it suffers a bit not from its layout but from the lay of its land. Each
hole is distinct, but without elevated tees or dramatic backdrops there's
little in the way of memorability, a key ingredient to the ranking of
course quality. |

Course description
The 18 original holes at Bajamar, now Percy Clifford designed the Lagos
and Vista nines, in 1976. In the early 1990s the course underwent a
redesign, mostly to the tees and greens, and a new irrigation system was
installed. The Oceano nine, designed by Robert Von Hagge, opened in June
1996.
Lagos nine:
This is the lone par-35 layout, with three par-3 holes, two of them to
greens guarded by water. Unless you're a long hitter, don't try the back
gold tees; they add nearly 400 yards compared with the blues and result in
a pair of par-4s that stretch 468 and 455 yards. There's no ocean to worry
about here, but fairway-landing areas are well protected by bunkers, as
are most of the greens.
Vista nine:
A traditional par-36 configuration, these nine holes, with fairways set in
the middle of scrub, give a British Isles flavor to Bajamar. Water is a
concern only on the approach to the par-5 second hole. The barranca areas
off the regularly clipped part of the course are considered lateral
hazards, and you may play the ball as it lies as long as you don't ground
your club.
Oceano nine: This nine provides the feel of surfside golf in
Hawaii, with the Pacific there to catch any slices on the fifth through
eighth holes. The fun really starts at the fourth, where the approach on a
relatively short par-4 is over a chasm to a wide but shallow green. The
fifth is the lone par-3 on the side, with a tee shot over a cove from 169
(blue tees) or 183 (gold) yards out. The eighth, this nine's only par-5
has its tees set directly above the ocean with a fairway that bends to the
right. Big hitters can gamble by taking the direct route over as much
water as they feel they can bite off. The green here is practically
encircled by sand. |
